Quiz R1 — IELTS Reading: Urban Rooftop Farming - (True/False/Not Given)
IELTS Reading – True/False/Not Given. Read the passage, then decide if each statement is True (matches the text), False (contradicts it), or Not Given (the text doesn’t say).
Passage
Urban Rooftop Farming has grown rapidly in several cities over the last decade. While early projects focused on community engagement and education, newer farms increasingly supply local restaurants and small grocers. Proponents claim rooftops can moderate building temperatures, reducing cooling costs in summer and insulating in winter. Several small studies have reported modest energy savings, although the results vary with climate, roof design, and crop density.
Water use remains a concern. Many rooftop farms depend on captured rainwater, but periods of drought necessitate supplemental irrigation. Critics argue that the environmental benefits are overstated if potable water is used regularly. To address this, some farms employ drip irrigation and moisture sensors to limit waste. Others experiment with drought-tolerant leafy greens and herbs, which often command higher prices in urban markets.
Yields can be unpredictable. Wind exposure, limited soil depth, and weight restrictions affect what can be grown. Nevertheless, managers report consistent demand for specialty produce—edible flowers, microgreens, and rare varieties— that travel poorly and are best sold fresh. There is little evidence that rooftop farms alone can transform city-wide food security, yet planners increasingly regard them as one component of a diversified urban food system.
